Hainan’s Beautiful Beaches to Host Inaugural Event of China’s Next Boom Sport
On January 10th and 11th 2009, the first annual Surfing Hainan will take place on Hainan’s east coast, attracting surfers from throughout Asia to compete and promote a sport gaining popularity among China’s youth.
Hainan’s east coast gets quality and consistent waves from October until March, enjoyed by a small group of local Hainan surfers familiar with the islands coastline. But things are rapidly changing with Hainan’s east coast already becoming a popular destination for surfers from Asia and the world.
Surfing Hainan is locally-run surf company which provides lessons, day trips, packages and equipment rentals and sales. They have been developing the sport’s popularity on the island since 2007, noticing an increase in interest amongst from both surfers coming from abroad, and Chinese nationals looking to learn this popular sport. Surfing Hainan owner Brendan Sheridan says “Hainan has to be one of the last easily accessed tropical destinations in the world that still has virtually empty surf.”
The competition looks to have good support in its first year and will have a positive influence on the local surfing and tourism scene. Surfing Hainan is hosting the event, using its local knowledge of waves and conditions to ensure the best possible surf for competitors.
As surfing can be performed in several different ways the competition will contain three surfing disciplines of short board stand-up surfing, longboard stand-up surfing and bodyboarding, giving competitors the chance to perform in their discipline of preference.
With the sport being relatively new to the Chinese sporting scene, competition organizers hope to educate the Chinese public about surfing culture and technique. With a free coaching day planned for one of the two competition days, it is hoped local Chinese can get a chance to experience the thrill of surfing to increase the growth of the sport. The competition will raise awareness of surfing in China with hopes that in the near future, China will be able to compete on the world stage.
Surfing looks to have a bright future in China with more surfing related events happening and more major surf brands entering the market. The 2009 Surfing Hainan Open is open to all willing competitors, and interested parties can find information about entries on: www.surfinghainan.com
