It has been a rough few days at Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver, where broad-reaching cuts affected team riders, approximately 30 staffers, and entire brands. The cuts were made during a multi-day process, which forced this article to be taken down as members of the Quiksilver umbrella of brands had not all been notified when we originally published this piece this morning.
On the team front, the decision was made to cut many athletes, while keeping the marquee riders in the respective programs such as Kelly Slater, Dane Reynolds, Mark Healey, Travis Rice, and Tony Hawk. DC also experienced deep cuts in its BMX and surf athlete rosters, as did Quiksilver’s Canadian surf, skate, and snow programs. The cuts were not as deep as originally reported and numerous other athletes were retained, but the specifics have not as yet been made public.
On the brand front, VSTR, Quiksilver Womens, and Quiksilver Girls were all cut, along with their staff members, and several high ranking marketing staffers.
The news follows the recent appointment of Quiksilver CEO Andy Mooney, who joined the brand in early January, and has ushered the company’s stock through a stratospheric rise on Wall Street from a 52-week low of $2.09, to a recent 52-week high of $6.83.
