It’s another sunshine filled day in Shanghai and this morning we kick things off on the mini mega ramp, for skateboard qualifiers. Doors opened at 10 AM this morning, and it was a pretty decent crowd for how early it was. Apparently today is a holiday here, so there were plenty of fans eager to see some action at the Kia World Extreme Games. As everyone filed in, they checked out the interactive sponsor village, but then started to gravitate towards the FMX setup. Those guys were just running the bikes and getting the engines hot and it drew quite a crowd. As soon as they shut down the bikes, everyone quickly moved over to the mini mega ramp to check out the last bit of skate practice.

There were 7 spots up for grabs this morning, in the mini mega qualifier. The 7 skaters transferring on, would join 3 pre qualified skaters, from last years results. There were 12 skaters in the field, and we broke them up into 3 heats of 4. Everyone got 5 runs, and it was the best run that counted. Top 7 overall between the 3 heats, would make it to the final.

The first heat consisted of Beaver Fleming, Farris Rahman, Edgard Pereira, and Mitchie Brusco. Mitchie and Edgard were the two standouts from this heat, and both would make it to the finals. Mitchie was in the lead by virtue of his first run, with a backside kickflip 360 to a big body varial 540 on the quarter. That was the one full run Mitchie would make, but it was enough to be on top at the end of heat 1. Edgard also made his 1st run with a backside 360 over the gap to a backside 540 on the quarter. He would build on that in run 4, with a heelflip body varial 360 over the gap, to backside 540 on the quarter.

The heat 2 lineup was Trey Wood, Rob Lorifice, Jagger Eaton, and Jake Brown. Things definitely heated up in this round, as 3 of the 4 skaters would secure themselves into one of those 7 spots up for grabs. Trey started it off in round 1 with indy grab backflip over the gap, to a big mctwist on the quarter. He backed that up in the 3rd round by putting down a 720 over the gap, then a big mctwist on the quarter, with a bit of a Japan air style tweak to it. That bumped up his score, and put him in the top spot, moving Mitchie Brusco down to 2nd. Jagger was only able to put together one run, a switch backside 180 ollie over the gap to mctwist, but it was enough to qualify 3rd. Jake Brown put one down in round one with japan 360 mute grab over the gap to a huge mctwist on the quarter. In his 3rd run, he changed up the line to a backside Ollie 360 into a huge carving mctwist on the quarter, and would finish heat two, sitting in 4th place.

The 3rd and final heat lineup was Jett Eaton, Marcelo Bastos, Paul-Luc Ronchetti, and Jono Schwan. Jono was the first to put down a full run in round one. He did a backside 360 over the gap to a huge melon grab 540 on the quarter, which put him into 6th place after that round. In round 2, Marcelo made a run consisting of an indy grab 360 over the gap to an indy 540 on the quarter, which moved him into 7th place after round 2. Jono then stepped it up in round 4, where he threw a kickflip body varial backside 360 on the gap, into a body varial backside 540. This bumped him up one spot into 5th. Marcelo was able to improve in the final round with a frontside 360 over the gap to an indy 540 on the quarter, which moved him up one spot into 6th.

The final standings were:

1. Trey Wood
2. Mitchie Brusco
3. Jagger Eaton
4. Jake Brown
5. Jono Schwan
6. Marcelo Bastos
7. Edgard Pereira
The finals kick off Friday at 2, and these 7 skaters will join Ronnie Gomes, Andy Macdonald and Italo Panarrubia, who are pre qualified from last years standings.

The last event of the day, was the skate street qualifiers. A decent sized crowd was still on hand, to watch the field of 16, get cut down to 6. They were divided up in to four heats of 4. Each skater was given three runs of 45 seconds, and it was the best run that counted.

Ryo Sejiri, and Firdaus Rahman were able to qualify out of heat number one. Firdaus highlights included a backside 360 over the hip the hard way, and consistent tre flips over the wedge to wedge gap, which was enough to qualify him in 5th. Ryo was able to put down a switch 50-50 on one of the rails, and also a big spin board slide, and he ended up being the top qualifier of the event.

The next heat to see anyone make the cut was heat 3. Brian Peacock qualified in 2nd with one of the hardest tricks of the day, a nolli cab heelflip varial over the hip. As a matter of fact, he tried that trick in all 3 runs, and made every one. Some of his other highlights included a switch tre flip up the step up, and switch backside 180 over the stairs. Jett Eaton was the other skater to make the cut from this heat. He was having a good time doing rodeo 540’s on the big quarter pipe, but also a landed a couple of frontside 270’s to back lip down the big rail. He finished out in 4th place.

The last two transfer spots came out of the 4th and final heat. Farris Rahman worked his way into the 6th and final spot, with the big standout for him being a front blunt on the hubba ledge. Jagger Eaton qualified in 3rd with a couple of kickflip frontside airs on the big quarter, and an impressive frontside nose blunt on the big recessed wedge ramp. Those 6 guys will join Austen Seaholm, Li ZJ iXing, Jordan Hoffart, and Kevin Chen in the finals on Friday at 5:30.
