Everything You Need to Know About Making a Sponsor-Me Video

getsponser1

Want to turn landing tricks on your board into a satisfying and lucrative career? Well, then, you’ll need some support, both in the forms of funds and product. But unless you’ve won Tampa Am or happen to live in the same neighborhood as a team manager, you’ll probably have to compile your best stuff in a sponsor-me video for companies to check out. Before you head to your local park with your filmer bro to start clocking that footy, though, you should know what to put in that edit and, maybe more important, what to leave out. Will the video you produce land you a sponsor? Not on its own. To go beyond the handful of free boards it may get you, you’ll have to back your ripping up in person and prove you can gel with the team you’re trying to get on. A great collection of clips can open the door, though. We asked a couple of prominent team managers how to ensure it does exactly that. For English scroll down.

Showcase Your Personality

Toy Machine already has a Daniel Lutheran, Baker a Theotis Beasley, Death a Richie Jackson. And even if one of those dudes is your all-time favorite and you want to be just like him, his sponsor might prefer to put you—rather than a facsimile of him—on the team.

But while you’ll want to bring something the brand doesn’t have, you’ll also need to fit its image. It’s all about striking a balance between those two conflicting, though complementary, demands.

Come Out Strong

Mike Sinclair serves as team manager for Tum Yeto, a distributor that is home to some serious brands—Toy Machine, Foundation, and Pig among them. His schedule is pretty full. So if you want to be considered for any of those teams, your footage will have to get straight to the point.

“The thing I hate the worst from sponsor-me tapes is the video buildup,” he says. “Your slams, your almost-makes, you giving knuckles to your bros—there’s already been a minute gone by, and I’m about to turn your shit off.”

If you’re putting together a video, send two minutes of your best stuff. No throwaways. If you can kickflip back Smith down an 18-stair, do that. But don’t hesitate to get creative, too.  “If someone started with a back three on flat, and did some cool line, and looked cool, it would get my attention just the same,” Sinclair says.

Make Your Footage Easy to Watch

The easier it is for a team manager to watch your footage, the more likely he’ll be to, well, watch it. In the interest of convenience, put it on YouTube or Vimeo, where it can be streamed without hassle.

“I don’t want to download anything,” Sinclair says. “I don’t want to search for it. I want a direct link where I click it and it goes.”

Leave the Park Footage Out

James Craig, Dwindle Distribution’s team manager, oversees brands including Cliché, Blind, Almost, Darkstar, and Enjoi. When it comes to sponsor-me tapes, he knows what matters—and it’s not the clips you collected at your local quarterpipe and flatbar.

“Send street footage, not skatepark footage,” he says. “The skatepark is made for you to do tricks. The streets aren’t.”

In other words, as great as your skatepark stuff may be, it doesn’t prove much.

Don't Fake Your Style

Your style matters, but only when it’s the real thing. So if you want to emulate Gino, go ahead—but any team manager worth his salt will see exactly what you’re doing.

“If [someone’s style] is genuine, that’s going to show,” Craig says. “If it’s kind of contrived, people are going to be able to see that as well.”

getsponsor7

Get a Strong Co-Sign

Youness Amrani, who turned pro for Almost in March, got sponsored by way of a video. But he had an advantage that most kids don’t enjoy: a cosign from an existing team member.

“I’m pretty sure the person who sent it was Lewis Marnell,” an Almost pro who died last year, Craig says. “So it helps to get on through a team rider. If you have people to vouch for you, that’s huge.”

getsponsor8

Show Your Versatility

Can you skate ledges? Handrails? Transition? Good. Include footage of all three—and whatever else you’ve got—to show prospective sponsors exactly what you’re capable of. A rider who can rip one or the other is good, but an all-terrain vehicle who can stack clips and shred demos is better. There’s a reason why guys like Elijah Berle and Raven Tershy—both of whom can skate whatever you put in front of them—are killing it right now.

getsponsor9

Make Sure Your Filmer Is Good

If fancy editing and clever musical choices won’t always help get you on a team, poorly filmed footage will definitely slam the door immediately. That means that the dude you trust to immortalize your skating should be able to make it look as good as possible. Can he not shoot fisheye? That’s cool—go long lens. Just make sure that the footage does your skating justice.

getsponsor10

  • Forget the Resume

In addition to your footage, you may want to send a team manager a resume outlining the contests you’ve won and the local press coverage you’ve received, along with a recommendation from your homeroom teacher. Before you do that, though, stop and think: What will any of this—contest results included—prove to a company?

All a team manager really wants to know is who you are, where you’re from, and who else you ride for. So save everything else for someone else—preferably a person who has no sway over your fledgling skate career.

getsponsor11

Be Better Than the Team You're Trying to Get On

If a company is watching sponsor-me footage, it’s because it’s looking for its future pros. And its team manager is only going to see you as one of those pros if you’re actually good enough to have a board with your name on it today. There are millions of great kids out there; for proof, look no further than the thousands of quality edits by unknowns on YouTube. But companies want the best, so unless you think you’re as good as the guys on the current team, you should keep practicing.
