Interview of SANskateboard and Drew Fraser, for English version please roll down.
CEO:James Tyson

DREW FRASER
Team Manager”

SAN Skateboarding CEO: JAMES TYSON
Q1. No one knows you, who are you? Where are you from? How long have you been in China for? Is it hard being here?
A : My name is James my chinese name is zhou yu (zhou yi de zhou, yuzhou de yu), im from England and i ve been in China for 10 years. Ive lived in Nanning for all of that time so im now nanning ben di ren haha. There are plenty of people who find it hard living in China and complain but me personally i love it here. There are bound to be challenges with culture and different worldviews but i ve been here a while and am used to it. I love Chinese people and i love China. My home is here. When i go back to England for visits every few years i actuallly feel a bit wierd there-reverse culture shock haha.
Q2: Why start a company in Nanning?
A: well, i have lived in Nanning for ten years my wife who is Indian lives here along with my two kids lots of my good friends are here so it makes sense to base the skate company here.
Q3.Do you skate? If so why did you start?
A: Yeah i skate! I've been skating for 20 years. I skate because of the first time i ever saw skating... i remember i was a little kid walking with my dad to church and i saw way in the distance a group of about 10 skaters all cruising down the road and then they all popped a little ollie onto the sidewalk. A really amazing feeling came over me when i saw that because when i saw them skating i felt some of their freedom. I think thats why so many people stop to watch us skate-they can feel freedom in it. That group of 10 skaters also looked really tight, like brothers-like a true family and i know that if we, as people, are honest with ourselves we are all looking for that- we are looking to belong and to be known and ultimately to be loved. As a kid watching those skaters i couldnt have explained this to you but all of these things were communicated to me when i saw skatieboarding for te first time.
Q4. How did you meet Drew and are you stoked he is riding with you guys now?
A: I met Drew a few years ago now and we have been friends ever since. He has known about our company for a while now but we were so stoked when he asked us about riding for our company. We alll have nothing but respect for him as a skater but more than that he is a great husband to his wife and a great dad to his kids. Truly we are family , we are brothrs and our connection goes way beyond just skateboarding.
Q5. You are the boss of SAN, Is SAN just another skate company? Why should people pay attention to San?
A: San is definitely NOT just another skate company. The company is a creative overflow of our relationshipo with shangdi (God) and the comapny values come straight from God too. SAN can be summed up with three simple words, these three words represent what God is all about and what we are all about too:
The first word is BLOOD: Blood represents commitment. When we fall trying to land a trick we bleed and then we get up and do it again. Skateboarding can teach us about commitment, and the blood on our clothes and bodies reminds us of that, our scars remind us of our sacrifice and the battles lost and won. Blood also represents life-without blood we die. Every good gift is from God, skateboarding is from God for us to enjoy but it also shows us Him...Think about the things we see as skaters in our everyday lives: Commitment, love, blood, scars, sacrifice adn battles won. Who is God committted too? Who does he love? Us! Has God ever battled and fought for anything? Yes, He has fought for a way for us to know Him. He has fought for us to have rest and peace, He came and fought to forgive all of the bad stuff we do, He has fought and made the way for our sickness to be healed and our torment to leave. Has God ever sacrifices anything? Yes, He sacrificed His own Son, Jesus Christ, for us. Has God ever bled? Yes , Jesus poured out His blood dying the death we deserved, dying in our place. Does God have scars? Yes! When they beat His body and nailed Him to the cross and stuck a spear in His side they left scars but when He rose again three days later having won the battle over our sin and death He made the way for anyone no mattter how bad we are to have new life and walk with Him in His victry. You see we are all willing to bleed and commit for skateboarding but God is willing to bleed and commit for us. Can you see how valuable each one of us is to God? and it doesnt depend on the fact that we can kickflip or not it depends on the fact that He loves us.
the second word is GLORY: I've been skating long enough to know that GLORY comes and goes. Those who were the best 10 years ago are not the best now. I've been the best skater at a spot and the worst at a spot too. I've leart that trying to live for my own glory just leaves me tired and dissappointed. So why is glory a value at our company? Glory mis-directed is dangerous and a waste of time but glory given to God is what we were made for. A lifestyle of glorifying and giving thanks to God for all he has done and continues to do for us will lead us all into our true destiny. Our destiny has amazing things in it like skateboarding but it is bigger than just skateboarding alone its more about bringing Gods kingdom to earth through skateboarding and its about knowing our Creator.
FREEDOM is the last word: We all know skateboarding ahs so much freedom and movement in it. But its only a kind of freedom. I remember before knew God deeply i had all kids of problems from doing drugs and drinking too much to being worried about my future and not knowing what i was meant to do etc but when i stepped on my board and pushed off all those problems would dissappear BUt the wierd thing was that whenever i stopped skating that night all those problems would come right back to me-i could never escape them. So you see skateboarding is a temporary form of freedom and exists to show us that a greater freedom is also availiable to us-its like an arrow pointing us in the right direction. Freedom by definition is not a temporary thing but is a permanent state. If someone is released from orison they dont havce to go back there to eat dinner every night-they are always free. Its the same with drinking and drugs -no matter how high you get you will come down and face the same problems you started with. All entertainment will only ever be temporary and we will always be dissappointed if we try and make these things our freeedom. The only way to true freedom is throught Jesus Christ. I remember the day i found this true freedom, i got down on my knees and admitted to od that i had made a mess of my life that i was a sinner and i said sorry to Him and asked Him to forgive me. I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Saviour and to come into my heart...and He did. My life used to be a wreck but now God has made me brand new-its only by His blood that i've been forgiven and set free from all the mess. BLOOD GLORY FREEDOM !!!
Q6: Where is San headed, does San have a destination?
A: SAN can never be a failure because our identity as a company and as individuals in the company is not wrapped up in money, fame, fashion and trends. Our identity is in knowing God and that we are His people. So we are already successful. We are headed to see and be a part of some amazing skating, we are headed to be a part of wordwide skateboard culture- we already have an internatinal team with skaters from China, hawaii, canada, america england. we are definitely going to see the SAN family grow because we are not an exclusive family, you dont have to believe in Jesus to roll with us -we love you and know that you are infinitely valuable no matter where you are at in your walk. Ive seen enough hurt and been to enough countries in the world to realize that we need to start caring about one another and that we are One-blood.
ANY LAST WORDS:
Jesus us the Way the Truth and the LIfe get to know Him He is right there with you and loves you!!!! thanks to God first of all and thanks to my beautiful and amazing wife for all the support and encouragement and thanks to my beautiful kids, thanks to the San crew all over the world you know who you are! and thanks to you guys at kicker club and everyone reading never quit , never give up breakthrough is around the corner!
DREW FRASER
Q1: Where are you from?
A: I come from a small town called Brantford, in Ontario Canada. Brantford is also the hometown of Alexander Grand Bell the inventor of the telephone.
Q2: Why did you move to China?
A: I’ve always been interested in China, I think it’s a desire that God put in my heart. I actually signed up for a Chinese class in high school but only two people registered so they cancelled the class. Later a friend of mine was living in Kunming and wanted to open an indoor Skatepark so he contacted me for help. I ended up moving there, studying Chinese and later building Ardent Skatepark and managing it for two years.
Q3: Why did you chose Kunming and then Nanning?
A: The simple answer is Kunming because of Ardent and Nanning because of SAN Skateboards. In my six years in China, I have traveled a lot and visited lots of cities but I seem to gravitate towards the smaller cities. It’s nice to visit the big city and skate the spots and feel the energy, but after a short time I begin to miss the community feel of smaller cities. I find people to be more friendly and life to be more comfortable in these type of places. Both Kunming and Nanning are big enough that you don’t feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere but small enough that people are not so overcome with the stress of life that they can stop and have a conversation.
Q4: What’s the difference between Kunming and the Nanning skate community?
A: Surprisingly both Kunming and Nanning have healthy, strong skate communities. I’ve found that any city that has a consistent skate shop and a central meeting place for skaters will grow and thrive. Skateboarders in many cities are spread out all over the city doing their own thing, but it’s when we can come together and share a space; whether a shop, a skatepark or a public park, that a sense of family develops among the skaters. That’s when skaters begin to do things not just for themselves but to help the community grow; teaching the younger kids, building obstacles to skate on, filming videos...
Q5: What does skating mean to you? Has that changed over the course of your life?
A: I love everything about skateboarding, the freedom it brings, the style, the adrenalin high you experience when pushing yourself to new limits, the sense of community among skaters, but one thing that keeps me hooked on skateboarding is that it can’t be mastered. Skateboarding is always evolving. It doesn’t matter how good you are, there’s always new tricks to learn. It’s the challenge of envisioning tricks in your head, battling with them and problem solving until you can make your body and board work together to achieve it. That never gets old.
The main thing that has changed over the years is I’m not thinking as much about how skateboarding can help me, but about how I can help skateboarding. As an older skater in the scene I believe I have a responsibility to do things to grow the skate community and make skateboarding better for the younger kids. Sitting around complaining about what sucks about skateboarding doesn’t change anything, if you’re an adult and you skate you have the ability to change things.
Q6: What’s so good about SAN Skateboards? What’s your role in SAN?
A: What’s cool about SAN is that there’s nothing else like it! SAN is not just another company making skateboards, it represents much more than that. SAN is a way of life, it’s a movement, it’s an overflow of our relationship with the creator of the Universe. We choose to do things differently and stand for something bigger than skateboarding.
I currently fill a lot of roles in the company. I am doing whatever is needed to help out but my official role is “Team Manager.”
Q7: What does the SAN team look like?
A: The SAN team is a unique blend of Chinese and foreign skaters all with distinct styles, but sharing a love for skateboarding and for God. Currently I am the only pro rider but we have a great lineup of up-and-coming AMs and a few FLOW riders representing us. Most of the guys have been with the company from the beginning, I’m actually the newest addition to the team but everyone has been very welcoming.
We currently have a 15 year old rider 李旺泽 who I’m especially hyped on. He is a master of all sorts of slappies, wallies, and wall ride variations. His outlook on skateboarding is super creative and unique, it’s refreshing to skate with him. He does the blunt slide down the hubba in my welcome part.
My goal is to take AM and FLOW riders into the SAN family and to help develop them into the next generation of PRO skaters. At the same time I want to develop a real brotherhood among the guys, not just a team but a family. I’m hyped on all the guys that we have on the team and I would love to see the SAN team expand and grow. If you are interested in joining the family tag @三Skateboarding and @Drew祝Fraser in your skate videos and we will be sure to check it out.
-What does the future look like for you? What's next for Drew?
I plan on spending many more years in China, pushing myself to do new things on my skateboard and exploring new terrain while doing whatever I can to give back to the skate community and help skaters.
We are currently working on a full-length skate video “Blood, Glory, Freedom” (coming in 2016) to showcase our team. I hope I can throw some new tricks in there outdo all of my old videos by taking things bigger, and being more creative.
ANY LAST WORDS:
THANK YOU KickerClub for this opportunity and Thanks to all the skaters out there that have supported me by following on social media, watching my videos and buying my boards. Keep following SAN for regular awesome skate content. "BLOOD, GLORY, FREEDOM!"
