1, Where are you now? When did you moved there? What are you doing there?
EDAN: I’m living in Salzburg, Austria, which is about 2 and a half hour train ride from the Austrian capital of Vienna, and one and a half hours from Munich, Germany. I’m only 20 minutes away from the German border, and this region is called Bavaria. I moved here this year, Jan 21st, on the first day of Chinese New Year, for a new job at the Red Bull headquarters in Salzburg.
2, What is the story for the Redbull offer?
There’s not much of a story; During the lockdown I was bored and just browsing on LinkedIn for new opportunities about a year ago, and found this position that seemed perfect for me. I decided to send in my resume, just to see. I got a call back about three weeks later asking for a first interview. After the first interview, I was invited for a second interview with the Head of Marketing, and then a third interview included doing a case study/powerpoint and presenting my case study to the bosses. The process was insanely long, it took about 9 months for the final offer; I remember not hearing back from them for like three months, and thinking I didn’t get the job.
3, What is your position and what exactly is your job?
My position is Global Communications Manager for Surf & Skate. Red Bull is really big worldwide, and each country has their own team, and their own projects. My job is to figure out which projects in the countries have a good story or are important as a Global story, and then building a plan to market it. Most of it is working with media partners and doing small events. I think giving some examples may be easier. It could be super easy, like bringing The Berrics to a Red Bull skate event that we had in Brazil, so they could cover it. Or instead of an event, it could be marketing our Athlete through media. For instance, one of our pro skaters from Latvia, Madars Apse, has a Red Bull TV show called Skate Tales. To build some hype around Madars and the show, I decided to hire Jenkem to create a storytelling piece around him to release at a similar time as Skate Tales. I then also reached out to the characters of the show, like the skate crew No Hotels, Atita in India, and Sk8mafia, to make sure they could do small premieres of the episodes for their local skate community during that time. To be honest, there’s so many projects from Red Bull, it can be hard prioritizing which projects from the countries need some support.
4, What is the headquarter of Redbull looks like?
Red Bull has three offices in Salzburg; the main one is super beautiful, next to a lake called Fuschl am See. It’s most often considered the main headquarter because that’s where a lot of the top management in sales and marketing work; but it’s about a thirty minute drive from town. I work in an office called Elsbethen, which is home to the media network, the department I work in. It’s bigger than our Fuschl office, and it used to be an army base. It’s really old, but they renovated it and it still kinda looks like a Harry Potter castle. Our last office is called Wals, and that is where our in house production team works. There they do editing, sound production, filming, etc.
5, What is it feel like to work with all those top athletes and media world wide?
It’s nice to meet these guys and work with them for sure. On the athlete side, it’s crazy to see their work ethic, their “pro skater” mentality, but also their struggles. It’s also quite crazy seeing the level of skating they do when they come visit. Last week TJ Rogers came to our office and we had a meeting, and then hit up some street spots. He just beat testicular cancer, and said he filmed a video part in six days in New York. He said he wanted to release a lot of video parts this year, and try to win Thrasher’s Skater of the Year. It’s just crazy hearing his story about cancer, but then meeting him in real life and seeing his work ethic in getting footage. Also I like working with Jenkem, Solo and Pocket; they always have great ideas and are down to brainstorm stories “bigger” than just skateboarding, which is something I admire. You can see the content they put out, there’s passion behind it.
6, How about your town, what’s your daily life like there? still keep “Healthy“?
I mean compared to Shanghai, Salzburg is a village. It’s super quiet, very peaceful, and there’s beautiful nature everywhere. I love Shanghai, but Salzburg is a nice place to just chill and be with nature. Europe is a way slower pace of life, and they really respect work/life balance. Starting from Thursday, coworkers are already driving to Italy to bike the mountains, or camping at the lake for a few days. I’m still a city boy, but slowly getting into it. Last week I hiked with some friends for nine hours, and I couldn’t walk for three days. During my hike, I saw so many 70 year olds hiking the mountain really fast, and also drinking beer on the top of the mountain. They are super healthy here…
7, I saw you traveled a lot, what the organization behind the Red Bull event looks like, compare with the China events, what’s the different?
Even though Salzburg is kinda boring, I think the best part of my job is that I get to travel a lot. I’ve gotten to visit ten countries in my six months here, and attend a lot of skate festivals and events. I think the biggest difference in events between Red Bull and China’s events, is the budget that gets put into it. Remember Vans Park Series in Shanghai? Imagine that but for each big Red Bull Skate event… Bigger budget means bigger/international skaters coming to them as well, which brings a lot of hype.
Besides Red Bull events, I’ve also gotten to go to CPH Open and World Skate Olympic Qualifiers. Those are two completely different events on the “skate culture spectrum”. CPH Open is extremely free spirited, and pros/local skaters travel across the world to come party, skate and chill for five days. You can just walk around and meet a lot of Pros, who are super friendly, and chill with them. People are there to purely enjoy the love of skateboarding. The Copenhagen government also sponsors the event, since it brings so much tourism. I think a lot of events in China miss that creativity and support, or often get mis-directed due to business pressures and reasons.
8, How about your Team Healthy? Get some new blood in Europe?
Team Healthy is still alive in some sense, Team Healthy is now worldwide!! Joe is handling it in China, Edward is in Vegas, handling the US, and I’m in Europe. We’ll keep making products here and there and we got some homies in Europe who are supporting, but I haven’t done any events yet. I do miss how active Team Healthy was in China, and the community we built there. Hopefully we can get a big event happening there. We would like to plan a tour to bring some of the Chinese skaters to the European events next year, possibly for a video…or bring some European rippers to China.
9, Any plan to come back visit China? Any Redbull event plan come to China?
So far I don’t know any Red Bull skate/surf events in China, but the best part is that I can pitch an idea to my team, and if it works out, I can come for work! I know some people in the Red Bull China team, and I hope we can figure something out. Maybe I can bring Jenkem or Thrasher to do a Red Bull piece in china…there’s a lot of stories to be told in China’s skateboarding history. The founder of Jenkem, Ian, is half Chinese, so we had a talk about going to China to revisit his family history hahaha But for now, I want to go home to the US and visit my family, who I haven’t seen in five years. After that, I think I would make a small visit back to Shanghai sometime next year!!
10, Anything you want to say for all your friends here in China?
I still use wechat. Team Healthy for life. If you’re in Europe, hit me up. Make sure you drink at least two 1.5 Nongfu waters a day. Aliens are real. I miss congyoubings. Tell Zhang Lao Tou on Fumin Rd I said hi. Hope to see you all soon.

Chase Gabor

Team Healthy for life!
