Vans and Carpet Company Reunite to Unveil Skate Old Skool 36+ to the World
Let’s start with this video. If Vans hadn’t dropped the OG Style 36 (aka the OG Old Skool) back in ’77, Omar Hassan would probably be plumbing toilets right now, Atiba would be a straight-up greedy boss trying to squeeze every last drop out of his employees, Ray Barbee might’ve ended up a judge, Zion would definitely be the biggest troublemaker in your school, and Tony Alva would just be your friendly neighborhood grandpa.

So, today we’re talking about this: “What would you be doing if you weren’t skating?” We hit up a bunch of our friends at Vans to get their take on what they’d be up to outside of the skate life.
Jeremy Hu: Rapping, trying to bring up the Shanghai rap scene! Even though I can’t rap for shit, I just love the vibe, and I feel like it could influence the street youth in China.
Yuan Fei: Probably just a regular office worker, but I’d definitely find other hobbies. You gotta have something you’re into, something you can keep doing. Maybe I’d be a reporter, a sports or entertainment reporter.
Wang Guohua: If that were the case, there’d be endless possibilities.
Li Jiawei: Probably doing art exam prep training , or being an art teacher. I was actually a teaching assistant at an art studio for a year when I was retaking the exam, and that’s when I started skating. Once I got into skating, I never picked up a brush again.
Dahei: I’d probably be living that boring 9-to-5 life, then traveling everywhere. I feel like if I didn’t have skating, I could do anything. Maybe the most fun thing would be backpacking and traveling everywhere.
Shu Tiao: Maybe I’d be a customer service rep for an e-commerce company or doing web design. I used to study e-commerce, so I’d probably find a job related to that. But I also might be working in a factory, tightening screws.
Tracy: I’d probably be a hockey coach, keep pushing myself, try to find another side of myself. I actually played hockey and was a coach's assistant when I was in New York before I came back to work. Haha. I might also work for the NBA, or even be an agent for a star like LeBron.
Ye Jialiang: Maybe a pro drift skater, hahaha, yeah, still a skater. When I was a kid, I liked things that could slide but weren’t super mainstream, so my first board was literally drift board wheels on a skateboard, hahaha.
而这就是今天想和你们讨论的问题：“如果没有在滑板，你现在在做什么？”带着这个问题，我们也找到了一众 Vans 的好朋友，看看他们滑板以外的工作或生活畅想。
胡天祐：说唱，振兴上海说唱。虽然我一点都不会，但是我很喜欢这个 vibe，觉得也能影响中国的街头青年。
袁飞：有可能就是个上班族，但会找到另外的爱好，总要有一个自己喜欢的，可以一直玩的东西。也可能会是个记者，体育或者娱乐记者。
王国华：如果是假如的话，那将会有无限的可能性。
黎佳威：美术艺考培训😂，或者美术老师。因为之前复读了一年，就是在画室当助教，之后滑的板。滑进去再也不画了。
大黑：可能就做着朝九晚五的无趣的生活，然后到处旅游。我觉得没有滑板的话，可能什么都会干。可能最有趣的就是到处穷游，到处跑了。
薯条：也许是电商客服或者网页设计，以前学电商的，所以可能是跟这个有关的工作。不过也有可能当厂妹打螺丝。
TRACY：可能做冰球教练，继续突破，尝试发现另一个自己。我之前在纽约没有回来工作，打过冰球，也当过这个助教哈哈。
也有可能去 NBA 上班，或者就是要做球星的经纪人，比如詹姆斯。
叶嘉亮：或许是一名职业漂移板滑手哈哈哈，对，还是一名滑手。小时候就是喜欢一些可以滑动但又不那么大众的滑行运动，所以我第一块板选择把漂移板的轮子装到了滑板上面哈哈。
Yeah, everyone has endless possibilities outside of skating, and you can even add different identities on top of being a skater. And if it wasn’t for skating, Osama and Ayman, those two Egyptian brothers, might still be doing their old jobs: a water and electricity company engineer and a NASA network architect.
But fate had other plans. The doors of skateboarding opened up for them, and they ended up creating one of the most legendary skate shops & brands in the US – Carpet Company.

Performance is at the forefront, with impact-absorbing PopCush™ insoles, high-traction Sickstick™ rubber outsoles, and rugged Duracap™ overlays designed for both comfort and durability. Each pair is individually numbered and limited to just 1,977 pairs, paying homage to the year the iconic Old Skool™ debuted.
The Vans Skate Old Skool 36+ by Carpet Company channels the original yellow and black launch colorway of the Style 36, now crafted with premium materials like faux croc skin to further connect this release to the past Fall 2024 Vans x Carpet Company collaboration. The collection also features a Baggy Fit Fleece pullover and pants, with antique wash, hologram logo patch accompanied by a custom Carpet branded bag.
Carpet Company x Vans Skate Old Skool 36+ 采用了 Style 36 最初的黄黑配色方案，通体以优质材料（如人造鳄鱼皮）进行打造。

As expected from Vans and Carpet Company, the Skate Old Skool 36+ come with a range of unique features: custom labels adorned with Arabic text, interchangeable Velcro tongue patches, intricate embroidery, and die-cut rubber logos on Vans' iconic waffle tread.
The accompanying video campaign lookbook explores the question: Where would the icons of skate and music culture be if the Vans Old Skool had never been created in 1977? To bring this concept to life, Vans and Carpet collaborated on a "butterfly effect"- inspired commercial, imagining alternate realities for legends like J Mascis, Ray Barbee, Omar Hassan, Tony Alva, Ronnie Sandoval, Zion Wright and others. The commercial envisions the paths these cultural pioneers might have taken, had the Old Skool never existed to influence their journeys.
