We wrote an article about a year ago asking what would happen if US skaters lost TikTok, and it looks like it’s happening. Even Trump said he is going to save Tiktok, some skaters are already rushed into Rednote with their “cat tax.”
First of all, Why Rednote?
As everyone knows, all Chinese apps require a Chinese phone number to register, and if you want advanced features like live streaming or verification, you usually also need a Chinese ID. Even if they have overseas versions, they're completely separate apps with completely separate databases. For example, TikTok's Chinese version is called Douyin, and users in China can't download TikTok, while users overseas can't download Douyin.
When TikTok's deadline was approaching, tons of content creators started looking for new Chinese platforms. When they tried searching for TikTok's Chinese twin, Douyin, the first result (besides the ads) on App Store was actually Rednote. And Rednote's an exception—even though it has Chinese and international versions, the databases are connected! It even lets overseas users register with international phone numbers! It was definitely unexpected “mistake", but this unexpected thing made Rednote a new home for TikTok refugees. The world's just that amazing.
So, who’s on Rednote now?
Jake Hayes has already paid his "dog tax." But he still didn't escape the translation software's little hiccup, "likes ice skating." Luckily, some helpful netizens already told him about it in the comments.
Jake Hayes is definitely a pro at social media. He not only joked about being a "Tiktok Refugee," but also asked everyone how many times a day is appropriate to post skateboarding content. We immediately hit him up for a quick chat—way faster than getting an Instagram reply, haha. He told us that there aren't many foreign skaters registered on Rednote yet, and he's also looking forward to meeting more Chinese skaters.
We also found iconic LGBTQ+ skater Chandler Burton. In his latest video, he even added an unexpected tag: #WeightLossJourney ?
Tom Asta just hopped on Rednote yesterday, and his first two posts are straight fire. That SW FLIP BS TAIL even got flagged by Rednote as “risky behavior, please perform under professional guidance.”
Photographer Kevin Perez, who was just featured in the latest issue of Thrasher a few days ago, is also on board. Having someone like him is a pretty new experience for Chinese skaters. He’s not only down to share how he shoots shoe ads for Nike SB, but he’s also stoked to talk about his time filming with skaters.
OG Ronnie, who was a hotshot for éS and Blind back in the '90s, has now joined Rednote. There's already a bunch of stuff about him and éS on there, and now he's actually on the platform. People in the comments are already chatting with him about what some of the old pros are into these days—like golf.
Last time I saw him, he was doing the intro for Tyshawn Jones's new stuff. Wonder if we'll see him on Rednote in the future?
One of Southern California's iconic skate shops is also on Rednote, but it's the store manager who signed up.
Florida ain't for slackers, and Devin's proof. Coming up through the legendary 303 Skate Shop, he's now riding for MOB, Independent, OJ, and the whole crew.
Hardcore Devin is going hard with his content, already dropping over 20 posts in just a few days, and it's definitely hitting. Yesterday he had 479 followers and 2,313 likes on Rednote, and today he’s at 3,785 followers and 26,000 likes. That's a serious come-up!
Eleven years ago, Eddie Huang wrote a book titled Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir. The book recounts Huang's family story as second-generation immigrants. Today, tons of American skaters are going "fresh off the boat" to Rednote, a Chinese social media app.
Welcome, my skater Tiktok Refugee friends, the deeper you get into this, the more you'll realize how lucky you are.
